Question by : How much should it cost to get an ignition cylinder replaced if calling a mobile locksmith?
I have a 1992 Mazda Miata. Recently, the key broke off in the ignition. I called a mobile locksmith and he attempted to extract the key for a couple hours but failed. He determined that I needed to replace the ignition and gave me a price of $ 850 total for parts and labor. I looked online and found the ignition cylinder I need for $ 79.99. Is he giving me a fair price for the labor?

No, not really. I’d have expected the cylinder replacement to have cost $ 400 or so.

No, call the dealer. That is nuts. The mechanics at the dealer know your car and how to fix it. They base their rates on fixed estimates in a book. Dont mess with that stuff, let a qualified person do it right and it will have a guarantee too.
Absolutely not. You’re paying for mobile services. Take it to a local trustworthy shop. The services theyll be able to do is remove the key and cylinder and then replace the assembly. You can get a new ignition switch from a local parts store but depend on the shop to get you the right part, looks like there are multiple choices for your vehicle. Possibly could be as cheap as 40 bucks for the part plus labor. Expect labor to be up to 2 hours depending on how hard it is to remove the switch. Average labor rates varies from 65-100/hr
Edit: TAKING TO DEALER IS NUTS! This is a really easy job for your local professional shop for a lot less money.

Me, I would do it myself. But instead of just replacing the ignition switch, I would get a complete lock set so I would only need one key.
There are many mobile locksmiths that are honest and reliable. It sounds like you found one of the many scammer locksmiths out there. A good locksmith would charge you somewhere between $ 250-$ 350 for parts and labor for that job. If you are in San Diego give me a call and I can help.
